My spa keeps disconnecting

Last updated About 2 hours ago

You might see this as

  • "It works for a day or two, then disconnects again"

  • "My spa goes offline every few days and I have to unplug the Home module"

  • "It's been disconnecting daily since I got a new router"

  • "My internet works fine but the spa keeps dropping"

Quick answer

When the spa connects, then drops again and again, the cause is usually one of two things: the radio link between the two modules, or a setting on your router. The RF strength in the app tells which one.

Find your situation

In the Gecko app, open ☰ menu > Settings > Devices and look at RF Strength.

See My Home module blinks and never links to the spa for placement tips.

The Home module light is green, purple or red when the spa is offline

Your router or internet connection

Follow the steps below, and see The app says my spa is offline.

Steps: router and internet box

  1. Try turning off advanced security features on your router. Many routers and mesh systems have advanced security or threat protection features that can block the Home module's connection. Turning them off for a while shows whether they are the cause. Whether you leave them off afterwards is your choice. See Connection issue with mesh Wi-Fi systems and Connection issue with eero Wi-Fi systems for where to find them.

  2. If you have a Wi-Fi extender with a LAN port, try plugging the Home module into it instead of your main router. This can keep your router from blocking the Home module, and it lets you place the Home module closer to the spa.

  3. If your internet box has no such settings (some 5G home internet gateways, for example), plugging a small router between the internet box and the Home module can help.

  4. Restart both modules in order after any change: spa breaker off 15 seconds and back on, Home module unplugged 10 seconds and plugged back in, then give the app 2 minutes.

On business or managed networks with a firewall, outgoing connections on port 8883 need to be allowed. Home routers allow this by default.
