How to use the Test Strip Scanner
Last updated 18 days ago
Overview
The Test Strip Scanner lets you quickly analyze your spa water using compatible test strips and your phone’s camera.
Instead of entering readings manually, the app reads the strip colors automatically and generates a water report for you.
This feature is available with a Premium subscription.
Before you begin
For the most accurate scan results:
Use a compatible test strip supported by the app.
Make sure the strip is fresh and not expired.
Use good lighting with minimal shadows.
Place the strip on a clean, flat, light-colored surface.
⚠️ Avoid scanning in direct sunlight or under colored lighting, as this may affect color detection.
How to start a scan
Open the Water page in the Gecko app.
Tap Test Your Water.
Select your test strip product.
Tap Scan Now.
If your strip product is not selected yet, you can:
Choose a different supported product
Or enter readings manually instead
Prepare the test strip
Follow the instructions shown in the app:
Dip the strip in spa water for the recommended time.
Remove the strip and wait according to the strip manufacturer instructions.
Place the strip flat on a clean surface.
Avoid shadows, reflections, or wet surfaces around the strip.
💡 Tip: A neutral surface such as a countertop or the spa cover usually gives the best results.
Scan the strip
When the camera opens:
Align the strip inside the on-screen guide.
Make sure the entire strip is visible.
Keep your phone steady while taking the picture.
Avoid glare or bright reflections on the strip.
The app will automatically analyze the colors on the strip after the photo is taken.
Confirm your results
After the scan:
The app displays the detected readings for each water parameter.
Compare the detected colors with your physical strip.
If everything looks correct, tap Confirm.
The readings will then be added to your Water page and used for recommendations and water balance guidance.
If the scan results seem inaccurate
You can adjust the detected values directly on the result screen before confirming the report.
Always compare the scanned colors with the reference chart printed on your test strip bottle to ensure the readings match correctly.
⚠️ Lighting conditions can affect scan accuracy. Depending on shadows, reflections, or ambient light, the scanner may have difficulty distinguishing certain colors accurately. This is why we recommend always reviewing the detected values before confirming the scan.
For best results:
Use bright, neutral lighting
Avoid direct sunlight and reflections
Place the strip on a flat, uniform surface
Keep the strip fully inside the scanning guide
💡 Tip: You can perform a new scan every 30 minutes. Until then, the Test Your Water button will be temporarily disabled.
